How to measure square footage
Measure each room's length and width in feet at the longest points, then multiply the two numbers. For L-shaped rooms, split the space into two rectangles and enter each as its own row. The calculator adds every room and keeps a running total, so you can price flooring, paint, or an entire house listing. Measuring in inches? Divide by 12 first (e.g. 12'6" = 12.5 ft).
Worked example. Say you're measuring a two-room area: a 12 ft × 10 ft bedroom and a 15 ft × 12 ft living room. The bedroom is 12 × 10 = 120 ft²; the living room is 15 × 12 = 180 ft². Added together that's 300 ft² total. To convert, divide by 9 for square yards (300 ÷ 9 ≈ 33.33 yd²) or multiply by 0.0929 for square meters (300 × 0.0929 ≈ 27.9 m²).
