How many tiles do I need?

Multiply the room's length by its width to get square footage, add your waste allowance, then divide by the area of one tile. Straight layouts need 10% extra for cuts and breakage; diagonal and herringbone patterns waste more at the edges, so use 15%. Always buy the full amount in one order — tile dye lots vary, and a matching box six months later is never guaranteed.

Worked example. A 10 × 8 ft floor is 80 ft². For a straight layout, add 10% waste to get 88 ft². With 12×12 tiles (1 ft² each) that's 88 tiles; at the typical 10 ft² per box, that's ⌈88 ÷ 10⌉ = 9 boxes. Switch to a diagonal layout at 15% waste and the same floor needs 92 tiles, still 10 boxes.
